What is Cal Animage?
Cal Animage is UCSD’s Japanese Animation club.
If you’re just reading this from wordpress, visit http://animage.ucsd.edu/ for more information.
Why use the name Cal Animage Beta?
Cal Animage Beta was the original name used when the club was founded in 1990. Cal refers to California and Berkeley, Animage refers to a popular anime magazine in Japan, and Beta designates us the second UC anime club chapter. UCSD’s anime club was established in the same year as UC Berkeley’s anime club.
Why use the word ‘anime’?
Anime means ‘animation’ in Japanese. Having no such term of their own, the Japanese adopted this word from French. By this logic, Powerpuff Girls and Disney-animated works also technically count as anime, though in the US the term anime is commonly used in the context of Japanese animation only.
What does Cal Animage do?
We hold free anime showings on the UCSD campus every week of the normal school season, except during finals. Our showings are always on a big screen, in either a theater or a large lecture hall. We also try to organize anime film showings at the Price Center Theater at least once every quarter.
In addition to the weekly screenings, Cal Animage maintains an office in the Old Student Center with a fairly extensive library where members can rent AVIs, DVDs, and tapes of unlicenced anime series. Contact us if you’re interested in checking stuff out!

I’m a fan of Anime and would like to know more information about your club. I currently work for UCSD Medical Center and attended Revelle College in the past.

I’d love to speak with someone from the club… or possibly the whole club… or host a party for the club. Will someone please contact me to discuss.

Sounds like a great club I’d love to swing by and checkout some of the screenings. I was looking around at other Anime clubs in the area to see what else was out there. I’m from the San Diego Animanga club (an Anime, Manga and Japanese culture club in San Diego). Our purpose is to foster discussion and help promote Japanese Anime and Manga, as well as provide a fun place for you to hangout with like-minded fans. If there’s ever downtime w/ Cal Animag, feel free to check us out.
For more information go to SDAnimanga.net and be sure to visit our active forums to see all the latest happenings.

I have a buttload of anime VHS that I no longer want. They’re all in good condition, cases and everything. Want them for your club? I’ll give them to you free!

SDAnimanga doesn’t do a lot of anime/manga/JP related things, they tend to hang out and chill more. IMO, they seemed too average as a club, and not very dorky. Animage seemed a bit dorkier, more like an anime club should be like. I’m not saying that anime clubs should only watch anime, but SDAnimanga behaved too much like an average group, rather than a dork squad, which was what I was hoping for.
If it meets every Monday, how easy is it to attend?

Hey Guys,
Sorry to contact you guys so late in the game but I’ve just been swamped with life. I intern at DC Comics, more specifically CMX- the department that translates Japanese manga. Since I am interning here I get free copies of every title CMX publishes. Although CMX is not nearly as esteemed at VIZ, it still attracts a certain demographic. If there are any titles that are interesting, I can pick them up for you to help expand your library. Please check here for the listing:
http://www.dccomics.com/cmx/?action=on_sale
Please get back to me soon…seeing as I will intern here for only another week.
Good luck with finals!

Hi.
I’m a postdoc at SIO. I am a robo-anime fan. I lived in Tokyo for 10 years (from undergrad to PhD) until this March. I speak, write, read Japanese and was also working part-time as an interpreter for a Japanese government ODA.
I collect many chogokin and robot toys, and I watch mainly robo-anime, and read mangas too. (In fact, I had a problem with the US custom when I came here this April because I brought my whole collection from Japan to the US).
I’m very interested to join the anime club – could you tell me if the next meeting on campus?
Cheers,
Dave

Yes, if you would like to come, we would love to have another member, our next club meeting is posted on the website (well, it will be posted on the website as soon as I get information which will probably be on Friday as I usually get the info by Friday).
Right now, I am trying to restructure the club to make it better, it is kind of boring in that all we do right now is watch anime from 7-10pm on Mondays, but I hope that things will get better as our member base slowly grows and we get more club-member interaction and more events going.
Please go to animage.ucsd.edu to see the latest information.
I look forward to meeting you.

Please leave all your comments/questions/suggestions in the forum (http://animage.ucsd.edu/page9.html) or the shout box on the main page (http://animage.ucsd.edu/) since it seems like we are in the process of phasing out this portion of the site. Sorry for the trouble.
